DESCRIPTION:We are kicking off a new Feminist Fightback reading group for the new year\, reading Lynne Segal’s Straight Sex: Rethinking the Politics of Pleasure. The book was originally published in 1994\, Segal’s contribution to the contentious debates in the feminist movement on the possibilities and problems of heterosexual desire for women.\n\nStill relevant today\, the book has just been republished by Verso (where you can currently get the print copy for £5 or ebook for £1). We’ll be reading the Preface and Chapter 1 for the first session on February 5th. We’ll then meet fortnightly\, reading the book chapter by chapter (list of dates to follow). Following a research on feminist and LGBT movements in contemporary India in 2011 she directed the award-winning documentary 365 without 377\, about the decriminalization of homosexuality in India. Her second film\, Rebel Menopause\, is the intimate portrait of extraordinary Thérèse Clerc\, and her inspiring ideas on ageing as a ‘time of complete freedom’.She is currently doing a practice-based PhD in film at Roeahmpton University\, London\, and curates the monthly programme of CinemaItaliaUK\, that brings the best contemporary Italian documentaries to London. \nIsland of Dreams: Had we to imagine a queer elderly home\, what would it be like? Can fantasy and imagination be a fruitful way to approach materiality? In this movie\, we are asking our close circle of friends for an imaginary description of a queer elderly home. Our idea was to engage with queer people in Athens\, Greece\, in order to reflect together upon aging fantasies through speculative fiction\, by imagining\, that is\,\nliving conditions and expectations while growing older in a collective housing project.\nThis fantasy of coexistence in a communal setting emerged out of the desire to determine our own lives on the one hand and out of the necessity to take care of the people in our communities\, who are often brought to despair\, poverty and loneliness within the conservative\, capitalist and crisis-stricken Greek society on the other. \nscreening from 7:30pm followed by exchanges with the two filmmakers \nCommon House – Unit 5E\, Punderson Gardens\, E2 9QG. donations welcome : £5 / 3£

We also felt that this rise was linked with the rise of fascists and the right\, and so we located our activism within anti-fascist direct action and the reclaiming of space. We then used the content of that debate in organizing several direct actions against the anti-choice groups. DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback are delighted to be hosting pro choice screening + discussion at the Festival of Choice\, Wednesday 23rd September\, 7pm (The May Day Rooms\, 88 Fleet Street\, EC4Y 1DH). \nWe’ll be screening Twelfth and Delaware\, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing’s 2010 documentary\, following a group of anti-abortion protestors in Florida as they set up a ‘pregnancy crisis centre’ across the road from an abortion clinic\, as well as a short video showing Feminist Fightback’s recent action against anti-abortion activists in Stratford. The screening will be followed by a discussion on tactics for defeating the anti-choice activists.

The documentary aims to provide answers to the understanding of porn from the perspective of pro-sex feminism that asserts that pornography – if wrested from patriarchal control – can become a tool of liberation. DESCRIPTION:A religious anti-abortion group are planning a procession from their church to a nearby abortion clinic. We can’t let this go unchallenged – they might have a right to express their opinion\, but they don’t have a god-given right to stand outside a clinic\, peddle lies and intimidate and harass people. As well as making sure people can access the clinic safely\, we want to do a lively action that makes a stand against the religious right-wing and their anti-women views that are dressed up as concern and counselling. \nAbortion is a class issue! Spread the news to all your networks!\nAbortion is not just a ‘women’s’ issue. And not just about a woman’s individual ‘right’ or ‘choice’*\, which is hard to come by in a capitalist system\, especially for black and working class women who always bear the brunt of such policies – either by not being able to access abortions if they want one\, or being forced to have one because the state doesn’t want them to reproduce\, or having to have one because they can’t afford to have a baby. As communists/anarchists/socialists of various types\, we should all recognise the importance of reproductive justice\, linked as it is to capitalist production and control over working class bodies. We all have an interest in defending ourselves against the state and religious powers. \nTogether we can overcome! SUMMARY:Abortion Rights Action Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few years\, the space outside many abortion clinics in England has become contested. Right-wing religious groups have been making their presence felt outside clinics\, both with prayer vigils complete with hymns and religious icons\, and through the deployment of specially trained ‘pavement councillors’ who make great efforts to stop women going into clinics. \nFeminist Fightback has been one of the groups who have taken action against this growing anti-choice presence\, countering in particular the group ‘Helpers’ of God’s Precious Infants’. This is a comparatively new terrain of struggle\, and we have experimented with different strategies\, and initiated a series of conversations on tactics with other activists. We cannot ignore these groups and hope they will go away; we need to organise\, and refuse to let them take this space. \nThe defence of a woman’s right to choose should not just be an issue for the feminist movement\, but needs to involve others standing in solidarity with those seeking an abortion. The next big mobilisation of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants in East London will be on Saturday May 9th in Stratford. Feminist Fightback will be there\, providing a pro-choice presence and offering support to those using the clinic on the day.
