DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback film club is delighted to have the opportunity to screen 2 amazing short documentaries on the Friday 13th November from 7:30pm at the Common House \nRebel Menopause by Adele Tulli :\nRebel Menopause is the intimate portrait of Therese Clerc\, a french 85 years old woman and a militant feminist whose passion for politics and women’s rights has driven her life. The Baba Yaga House\, an innovative co-housing project for women over 65\, is the latest of her many projects to empower women.\nRebel Menopause is the intimate portrait of an extraordinary woman and her inspiring ideas on ageing as a ‘time of complete freedom’.\nRebel Menopause Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU6ir8IQR8E\nDirector Adele Tulli Graduated in South Asian Studies at Cambridge University and in Screen Documentary at Goldsmiths\, Adele Tulli today works as a documentary filmmaker and film programmer. Following a research on feminist and LGBT movements in contemporary India in 2011 she directed the award-winning documentary 365 without 377\, about the decriminalization of homosexuality in India. Her second film\, Rebel Menopause\, is the intimate portrait of extraordinary Thérèse Clerc\, and her inspiring ideas on ageing as a ‘time of complete freedom’.She is currently doing a practice-based PhD in film at Roeahmpton University\, London\, and curates the monthly programme of CinemaItaliaUK\, that brings the best contemporary Italian documentaries to London. \nIsland of Dreams: Had we to imagine a queer elderly home\, what would it be like? Can fantasy and imagination be a fruitful way to approach materiality? In this movie\, we are asking our close circle of friends for an imaginary description of a queer elderly home. Our idea was to engage with queer people in Athens\, Greece\, in order to reflect together upon aging fantasies through speculative fiction\, by imagining\, that is\,\nliving conditions and expectations while growing older in a collective housing project.\nThis fantasy of coexistence in a communal setting emerged out of the desire to determine our own lives on the one hand and out of the necessity to take care of the people in our communities\, who are often brought to despair\, poverty and loneliness within the conservative\, capitalist and crisis-stricken Greek society on the other. \nscreening from 7:30pm followed by exchanges with the two filmmakers \nCommon House – Unit 5E\, Punderson Gardens\, E2 9QG. donations welcome : £5 / 3£

DESCRIPTION:Last year we held a debate on how to resist anti-abortion campaigners in the context of an escalation in the aggression and activity of these groups outside of clinics and differing opinions on how to confront them within the feminist community. We also felt that this rise was linked with the rise of fascists and the right\, and so we located our activism within anti-fascist direct action and the reclaiming of space. We then used the content of that debate in organizing several direct actions against the anti-choice groups. DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback are delighted to be hosting pro choice screening + discussion at the Festival of Choice\, Wednesday 23rd September\, 7pm (The May Day Rooms\, 88 Fleet Street\, EC4Y 1DH). \nWe’ll be screening Twelfth and Delaware\, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing’s 2010 documentary\, following a group of anti-abortion protestors in Florida as they set up a ‘pregnancy crisis centre’ across the road from an abortion clinic\, as well as a short video showing Feminist Fightback’s recent action against anti-abortion activists in Stratford. The screening will be followed by a discussion on tactics for defeating the anti-choice activists.

We can’t let this go unchallenged – they might have a right to express their opinion\, but they don’t have a god-given right to stand outside a clinic\, peddle lies and intimidate and harass people. As well as making sure people can access the clinic safely\, we want to do a lively action that makes a stand against the religious right-wing and their anti-women views that are dressed up as concern and counselling. \nAbortion is a class issue! Spread the news to all your networks!\nAbortion is not just a ‘women’s’ issue. SUMMARY:Abortion Rights Action Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few years\, the space outside many abortion clinics in England has become contested. Right-wing religious groups have been making their presence felt outside clinics\, both with prayer vigils complete with hymns and religious icons\, and through the deployment of specially trained ‘pavement councillors’ who make great efforts to stop women going into clinics. \nFeminist Fightback has been one of the groups who have taken action against this growing anti-choice presence\, countering in particular the group ‘Helpers’ of God’s Precious Infants’. This is a comparatively new terrain of struggle\, and we have experimented with different strategies\, and initiated a series of conversations on tactics with other activists. We cannot ignore these groups and hope they will go away; we need to organise\, and refuse to let them take this space. \nThe defence of a woman’s right to choose should not just be an issue for the feminist movement\, but needs to involve others standing in solidarity with those seeking an abortion. The next big mobilisation of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants in East London will be on Saturday May 9th in Stratford. Feminist Fightback will be there\, providing a pro-choice presence and offering support to those using the clinic on the day. SUMMARY:What is working?
DESCRIPTION:What is the connection between day-to-day workplace organising and wider anti-capitalist struggle? \nWhat is our role as ‘revolutionaries’ in our own workplaces? \nWhat kinds of workplace struggles open up possibilities for wider and more fundamental social and political change\, and what kinds simply reproduce existing hierarchies and end up containing class struggle? \nThis discussion event is for anyone involved in\, or interested in having an open debate about\, our varied experiences of workplace organising. There have been a number of high profile struggles recently: the Tres Cosas campaign by cleaners at the University of London\, the Brighton hospitality workers\, the Tube strikes organised by RMT\, big one-day public sector strikes. \nBut they leave many open questions: \n– If the union cannot struggle for different sections of workers e.g those on temporary contracts\, even within the same workplace\, what good is the union? And what forms of struggle that bring different types of workers together can\, or are\, emerging in its place? \n– What actions\, apart from largely symbolic one-day strikes\, actually put pressure on the bosses and the state? \n– How can our political activity help to build worker’s collective self-organisation? \n– How does a particular workplace affect the type of struggle and form of organisation? For example\, the University of London (Tres Cosas) cleaners have been helped in their success by a number of factors including things like: they work in a high-profile university campus with a ready supply of left-wing student activists to support them\, they have strategic and translation support from the IWGB\, and the majority of workers speak Spanish as a first language and share a common cultural/national identity. With these particular circumstances\, what can other workers in different situations then learn from their experience? \n– If an organisation proclaims victories to recruit members to its organisation\, how can we have an honest discussion about what didn’t work and more open and collective reflections on strategy and conclusions? \n– And crucially\, why is this important? Why do we bother with workplace organising? Obviously it is an integral part of our politics within the left/communist milieu\, perhaps for different reasons. But at the very least\, the processes and content of our organising efforts should somehow connect to our particular analyses of how capitalism is working and how we move beyond it. But in practice\, does it? \nThis event is an attempt to explore these questions. We think that we urgently need to review our struggles so that we can critically reflect on what worked\, what didn’t and why. While individual organisations might have these discussions behind closed doors\, we invite people across the revolutionary left with different political analyses and experiences in workers’ organisation to come together to share experiences\, critically reflect on our role as militants in our workplaces and crucially\, to think about how our decisions connect to our wider vision of political transformation. We hope to start a fruitful exchange that will bring us closer to the question of what (new) forms of organisation are emerging that can bring workers together and build a strong\, international working class movement. \nAs part of the discussion we’ll be hearing from a few different people about their experiences of organising: \nSomeone from an anarcho-syndicalist organisation will talk about their experiences of organising with precarious workers and organising strikes in FE colleges in London. She also has years of experience of working within more traditional union structures. There will also be someone to talk about organising Brighton hospitality workers. \nWe will have someone talking about their experiences of organising as precarious teaching assistants at SOAS without the support of the union who refused to back them because they were already in a dispute about the pay of permanent lecturers. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Film Club presents: 12th & Delaware
DESCRIPTION:For November’s Feminist Fightback Film Club\, we’ll be screening 12th and Delaware: a documentary revolving around a ‘pregnancy care centre’ set up across the road from an abortion clinic in suburban Florida. \nPregnancy care centres/crisis centres are unregulated clinics set up to look like providers of medical advice for pregnant women\, with the aim of convincing them not to access abortion. They are widespread across the US\, and are on the rise in the UK. Director Heidi Ewing has referred to them as ‘the number one tactic of the pro-life movement’. \nThis installation of film club follows on from our workshop at the Anarchist Bookfair on tactics for countering rising anti-choice activism.
