DESCRIPTION:The Common House is co-hosting a street festival on Middleton Green\, together with Teesdale & Hollybush TRA and Phytology in the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve. \nWe are going to bring what happens inside community spaces outside\, with stalls so that community and activist groups can tell people about themselves\, as well as food\, music and games\, so that we can meet each other and build community in the local area. \nThe festival will take place on and around Middleton Green and we will provide some covered spaces in case of rain. \nTwo accessible toilets will be available\, a compost toilet at Phytology which is on Middleton Street\, and in Keddleston Community Centre\, E2 9QT. We always have a discussion after the film\, and drinks and snacks are available. \nBased on Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel about her life in pre and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe\, the film traces Satrapi’s growth from child to rebellious\, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s\, with members of her left-wing family detained and then executed\, and the disastrous Iran/Iraq war. \nDoors open at 7pm. We always have a discussion after the film\, and drinks and snacks are available.  \nWe will be showing the pioneering first feature from Menelik Shabazz\, one of the most significant artists and activists in contemporary British film. Burning an Illusion\, a film about transformation and identity\,  marked a coming of age for black British cinema. It was the first British film to give a central voice to a black woman\, charting her journey to emotional maturity\, emancipation and political awakening. \nDoors open at 7pm. DESCRIPTION:In the month of International Women’s Day\, Feminist Fightback and London IWW are showing Year of the Beaver\, a film about the Grunwick Strike of 1976. \nThe strike at the Grunwick photographic processing plant\, with a workforce predominated by Asian women\, lasted for 2 years. Year of the Beaver is focused on the experiences of the workers who were involved in the dispute\, and explores the roles played by the media\, police and even union leadership in sabotaging and breaking the strike.  \nBefore we show the film\, there will be a brief talk on the background of the Grunwick strike\, and on the workplaces in west London where many migrant women work today. \n£5 waged\, £3 unwaged. DESCRIPTION:Turup (Checkmate) takes as its backdrop the roadside chess matches of working-class communities in Chakki Chouraha\, a neighbourhood in the central Indian city of Bhopal. Whilst it’s men who dominate the chess games\, the film tells the intertwined stories of three women: a domestic worker named Monika; Neelima\, a former journalist struggling with married life; and Lata\, young and in love. \nTurup was made by the Bhopal-based Ektara collective: an autonomous grassroots cinema group composed primarily of women. The process of making it was collaborative\, with local residents taking roles on and off screen\, and collective decisions about script\, direction and music. \nSuggested donation on the door £2/3/5 un/low/higher waged. All donations will go to the Ektara collective\, who are an unfunded independent group.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 20 May there will be a big anti-abortion jamboree in Birmingham. Feminist Fightback along with other feminist activist groups in London are mobilising as many people as possible to travel there to join the a counter demonstration – with creative actions and slogans we will be arguing for reproductive rights! \nCome and join us – we have cheap train tickets from London (meeting at Euston before 9am). Tickets are £20 waged and £10 low-waged/concessions. \nFor more details about the demonstration\, to reserve a ticket\, what to expect on the day and where to meet us email: feminist.fightback@gmail.com \nMore info: http://www.abortionrights.org.uk/event/womens-march-against-trump-birmingham \nOur statement for the day: \nOur bodies\, our lives\, our right to decide! \nAround the world\, the right is winning elections by promising to defend ‘traditional family values’. But they are talking about defending a very specific type of family — a white\, heterosexual\, wealthy couple who can afford to pay for childcare and own a home in an area with well-funded schools and hospitals. \nWorking-class people in the UK are struggling to raise their families in the face of cuts to services. Since 2010\, 763 Sure Start children’s centres and 34 domestic violence refuges have closed. Zero-hour contracts and poverty wages leave many families without a reliable income\, whilst rip-off rents mean that many children are living in poor quality\, precarious housing. \nAfter a trial at St George’s Hospital in London\, 20 NHS hospitals will require a passport and utility bill before treating patients\, leaving migrants with precarious status or no papers without access to sexual health and maternity services. \nThe ‘pro-life’ people here today want an end to our right to decide whether or not we have a child\, but won’t oppose the conditions which limit our choices in the first place. They aren’t campaigning alongside us to oppose cuts to maternity or children’s services. They aren’t fighting for higher wages or better quality housing. It seems that they only care about children before they’re born\, that they only care about a ‘right to life’ for those who can afford it. \nStand with us against this attack on free\, safe\, legal abortion. We won’t go back to the backstreet.
