DESCRIPTION:In the month of International Women’s Day\, Feminist Fightback and London IWW are showing Year of the Beaver\, a film about the Grunwick Strike of 1976. \nThe strike at the Grunwick photographic processing plant\, with a workforce predominated by Asian women\, lasted for 2 years. Year of the Beaver is focused on the experiences of the workers who were involved in the dispute\, and explores the roles played by the media\, police and even union leadership in sabotaging and breaking the strike.  \nBefore we show the film\, there will be a brief talk on the background of the Grunwick strike\, and on the workplaces in west London where many migrant women work today. \n£5 waged\, £3 unwaged. DESCRIPTION:Girlhood is a 2014 French coming of age drama film directed by Céline Sciamma\, starring Karidja Touré. It focuses on the life of a girl who lives in a rough neighborhood right outside of Paris and discusses and challenges conceptions of race\, gender and class. Sciamma’s goal was to capture the stories of black teenagers\, characters she claims are generally underdeveloped in French films. \nAs ever\, there will be an informal post-screening discussion after the film\, and snacks and drinks available. DESCRIPTION:Turup (Checkmate) takes as its backdrop the roadside chess matches of working-class communities in Chakki Chouraha\, a neighbourhood in the central Indian city of Bhopal. Whilst it’s men who dominate the chess games\, the film tells the intertwined stories of three women: a domestic worker named Monika; Neelima\, a former journalist struggling with married life; and Lata\, young and in love. \nTurup was made by the Bhopal-based Ektara collective: an autonomous grassroots cinema group composed primarily of women. The process of making it was collaborative\, with local residents taking roles on and off screen\, and collective decisions about script\, direction and music. \nSuggested donation on the door £2/3/5 un/low/higher waged. All donations will go to the Ektara collective\, who are an unfunded independent group.

But they are talking about defending a very specific type of family — a white\, heterosexual\, wealthy couple who can afford to pay for childcare and own a home in an area with well-funded schools and hospitals. \nWorking-class people in the UK are struggling to raise their families in the face of cuts to services. Since 2010\, 763 Sure Start children’s centres and 34 domestic violence refuges have closed. Zero-hour contracts and poverty wages leave many families without a reliable income\, whilst rip-off rents mean that many children are living in poor quality\, precarious housing. \nAfter a trial at St George’s Hospital in London\, 20 NHS hospitals will require a passport and utility bill before treating patients\, leaving migrants with precarious status or no papers without access to sexual health and maternity services. \nThe ‘pro-life’ people here today want an end to our right to decide whether or not we have a child\, but won’t oppose the conditions which limit our choices in the first place. They aren’t campaigning alongside us to oppose cuts to maternity or children’s services. They aren’t fighting for higher wages or better quality housing. It seems that they only care about children before they’re born\, that they only care about a ‘right to life’ for those who can afford it. \nStand with us against this attack on free\, safe\, legal abortion. We won’t go back to the backstreet.

DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback invites you to a day of workshops\, focussing on attacks on access to abortion around the world\, and what we can do to resist together. \n2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion in Britain\, but the upsurge in right-wing populism represents a serious threat to reproductive rights in the UK and internationally. The election of Trump bodes ill for women and people of other genders who require reproductive health services in the United States\, right-wing governments in Poland and Spain have attempted to introduce dracionian anti-choice legislation\, and abortion remains illegal in both the Republic and the North of Ireland. The return of a hard right Conservative party in Britain is also likely to herald attacks on our access to abortion – renewed attempts to cut back the time limit\, the erosion of abortion services through NHS privatisation\, increased surveillance of abortion providers\, and giving the green light to a rising tide of anti-choice bigots picketing clinics. \nFeminist Fightback believes this is a crucial moment for us to take stock of the situation\, learn from inspiring examples of feminist activism\, and strategise for the future. \nThis workshop will hear from feminist activists from Ireland\, Poland\, Spain and the United States\, as well as those of us in Feminist Fightback to have been active in fighting for reproductive rights in Britain over the last 10 years. We will be focusing on attacks on abortion but through the lens of a wider reproductive rights model\, insisting that real ‘choice’ and control over our bodies must also entail the right to housing\, free healthcare and sex and relationships education. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Film Club shows: Harlan County USA
DESCRIPTION:A different\, better USA\, to the one that Donald Trump represents. \nHarlan County USA is Barbara Kopple’s powerful 1976 documentary of a coal-mining strike in Kentucky. Years in the making\, the film documents the extreme hardship of a community – women and men – fighting for decent wages\, safety\, the right to organise and the right to strike. \nThe film shows the “whole picture” of class war – corporate greed\, collusion between the police and the mining bosses\, the rights and wrongs of union organisation and the militancy of working-class women on the picket line.
