DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback invites you to a day of workshops\, focussing on attacks on access to abortion around the world\, and what we can do to resist together. \n2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion in Britain\, but the upsurge in right-wing populism represents a serious threat to reproductive rights in the UK and internationally. The election of Trump bodes ill for women and people of other genders who require reproductive health services in the United States\, right-wing governments in Poland and Spain have attempted to introduce dracionian anti-choice legislation\, and abortion remains illegal in both the Republic and the North of Ireland. The return of a hard right Conservative party in Britain is also likely to herald attacks on our access to abortion – renewed attempts to cut back the time limit\, the erosion of abortion services through NHS privatisation\, increased surveillance of abortion providers\, and giving the green light to a rising tide of anti-choice bigots picketing clinics. \nFeminist Fightback believes this is a crucial moment for us to take stock of the situation\, learn from inspiring examples of feminist activism\, and strategise for the future. \nThis workshop will hear from feminist activists from Ireland\, Poland\, Spain and the United States\, as well as those of us in Feminist Fightback to have been active in fighting for reproductive rights in Britain over the last 10 years. We will be focusing on attacks on abortion but through the lens of a wider reproductive rights model\, insisting that real ‘choice’ and control over our bodies must also entail the right to housing\, free healthcare and sex and relationships education. DESCRIPTION:A different\, better USA\, to the one that Donald Trump represents. \nHarlan County USA is Barbara Kopple’s powerful 1976 documentary of a coal-mining strike in Kentucky. Years in the making\, the film documents the extreme hardship of a community – women and men – fighting for decent wages\, safety\, the right to organise and the right to strike. \nThe film shows the “whole picture” of class war – corporate greed\, collusion between the police and the mining bosses\, the rights and wrongs of union organisation and the militancy of working-class women on the picket line. Can fantasy and imagination be a fruitful way to approach materiality? In this movie\, we are asking our close circle of friends for an imaginary description of a queer elderly home. DESCRIPTION:Our political discussion this month will be on electoral politics\, in the light of recent successes for ‘citizen’s platforms’ in mayoral elections in Spain\, and Jeremy Corbyn’s success in the Labour leadership contest. In the second hour\, we’ll make plans for our activity in the next month and beyond. \n \nAll self-defining women welcome to organising meetings\, this includes trans women and intersex women. \nPlease contact us if you need childcare. SUMMARY:Festival of Choice: Tactics to counteract anti-choice
DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback are delighted to be hosting pro choice screening + discussion at the Festival of Choice\, Wednesday 23rd September\, 7pm (The May Day Rooms\, 88 Fleet Street\, EC4Y 1DH). \nWe’ll be screening Twelfth and Delaware\, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing’s 2010 documentary\, following a group of anti-abortion protestors in Florida as they set up a ‘pregnancy crisis centre’ across the road from an abortion clinic\, as well as a short video showing Feminist Fightback’s recent action against anti-abortion activists in Stratford. The screening will be followed by a discussion on tactics for defeating the anti-choice activists.
