SUMMARY:Women's Strike 2024 - Feminist Strike for Liberation
DESCRIPTION:📣 We take the streets again this year in a feminist strike for liberation. \n📍Friday 8th of March 2024 6.30pm \n📍Location Soho Square\, London \n  \nFrom London to Palestine\, Abya Yala to Kurdistan\, our fight for liberation and solidarity must cross borders. None of us are free until all of us are free. \nThe freedom of Palestinians is intrinsic to our collective freedom against all forms of oppression. As feminists we support all liberation movements to combat injustice: we are building a movement to overcome colonial\, imperialist and patriarchal systems\, to build new more just worlds together. \nWe strike because around the world our siblings are losing their lives to patriarchal\, imperialist and colonial powers. \nWe strike to grieve our siblings. \nWe strike because we believe another world is possible. \nWe strike for collective liberation. \n  \nJoin us! Share this with all your friends! See you on the streets! \nIf your collective/organising group wants to join the call for the 8th of March\, get in touch! \n📣 We take the streets again this year in a feminist strike for liberation. \n  \nThis event is being organised and supported by a growing coalition of feminist collectives. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Greater than the sum of our parts: feminism\, inter/nationalism & Palestine - Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for the second book in our short look  at the Palestinian struggle. After January’s fiction respite we will spend February and March discussing the “Greater than the sum of our parts: feminism\, inter/nationalism & Palestine” \nIn this bold book\, Palestinian activist Nada Elia unpacks Zionism\, from its hypermilitarism to incarceration\, its environmental devastation and gendered violence. She insists that Palestine’s fate is linked through bonds of solidarity to other communities crossing racial and gender lines\, weaving an intersectional feminist understanding of Israeli apartheid throughout her analysis. \nWe will discuss this book in two sessions: \n\nMonday 26th of February:\n\nIntroduction- Feminist\, Abolitionist\, and Indigenous Horizons\nin the Struggle Against Settler Colonialism and Apartheid (15p)\nChapter 1 – Settler Colonialism and Indigenous Resistance from\nPalestine to Turtle Island (26p) and\nChapter 2 – Déjà Vu: Beyond Apartheid (28p)\nChapter 3 – Social and Political Liberation: No Free Homeland Without\nFree Women and Queers (27p)\,\n\n\nMonday 25th of March:\n\nChapter 4 – On This Land: Land and Cultural Reclamation from Turtle\nIsland to Palestine (25p) and\nChapter 5 – A Global Intifada (23p)\nEpilogue: Greater Than the Sum of Our Parts (4p)\nAppendix: Pledge—Palestine is a Feminist Issue (2p)\n\n\n\nPlease come having read the text. Drop us a line if you would like more details and to let us know if you will be joining\, so we have an idea of numbers at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nThese will take place in person at Golden Lane Community Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, London EC1Y 0SA. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Minor Detail by Adania Shibli
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for a one off mid-winter fiction session. Taking our cue from current events in Gaza and the return of the occupation of Palestine to the forefront\, we have decided to read a book relevant to the Palestinian struggle. \nWe will be reading Adania Shibli’s 2020 book Minor Detail. A haunting meditation on war\, violence and memory\, Minor Detail cuts to the heart of the Palestinian experience of dispossession\, life under occupation\, and the persistent difficulty of piecing together a narrative in the face of ongoing erasure and disempowerment. \nMinor Detail was awarded Times Books of the Year 2020 and was longlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize. \nPlease come having read the text. Drop us a line if you would like more details and to let us know if you will be joining\, so we have an idea of numbers at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nThese will take place in person at Golden Lane Community Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, London EC1Y 0SA. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub presents: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our Halloween film showing as this year we watch together Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014). Amirpour’s black and white debut film has become a cult classic often called the first Iranian vampire western. \nSet in the fictitious Iranian ghost town of Bad City\, the film features a chador-wearing\, skateboarding young female vampire known only as The Girl\, who stalks the streets of the city at night preying on unsavory men. \nThe Girl\, with her vampiric teeth and supernatural powers\, subverts the image of the veiled woman as submissive\, turning the victimhood suggested by the film’s title on its head. This girl walks alone at night with no fear; she is the one to be feared. \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged. Drinks and snacks will be available. \nSuggested donations on the door £2/5/10 unwaged/waged/solidarity. \nAll genders welcome. \nDoors open at 7pm. \nACCESS: \nThe film showing will take place on the ground floor of Pelican House\, in the room at the back of the courtyard. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment - Part 4
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for our summer reading group. We’ve taken the decision to replace the book we’d planned for our next reading group with ‘Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment’(2023) by Agnieszka Graff and Elżbieta Korolczuk. This book is much more aligned with our politics\, particularly around trans liberation and sex work decriminalisation. \n‘Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment’ charts the new phase of global struggles around gender equality and sexual democracy: the ultraconservative mobilization against “gender ideology” and feminist efforts to counteract it\, as well as how opposition to “gender” has become a key element of the rise of right-wing populism. The authors map the anti-gender campaigns as a global movement and argue that the anti-gender rhetoric is best understood as a reactionary critique of neoliberalism as a socio-cultural formation. \nWe’re reading ‘Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment’  to build our collective understanding of attacks on gender and reproductive rights from the hard right\, which is the current focus of Feminist Fightback’s activism. \nThe Open Access version of this book\, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. \nThe series will take place over four sessions: \nTuesday 25th July \n\nIntroduction: The demonisation of “gender” and the crisis of democracy.\nChapter 1: Gender\, anti-gender and right-wing populism: Recasting the debate.\n\nTuesday 29th August \n\nChapter 2: Mapping the anti-gender campaigns as a global movement: From religious trend to political struggle.\nChapter 3: “Worse than communism and nazism put together”: Poland’s anti-gender campaigns in a comparative perspective.\n\nTuesday 26th September \n\nChapter 4: Gender as “Ebola from Brussels”: The uses and abuses of the anti-colonial frame.\nChapter 5: Anxious parents and children in danger: The family as a refuge from Neoliberalism.\n\nTuesday 24th October \n\nChapter 6: Counteracting anti-gender movements: Towards a populist feminism?\nConclusions: Gender in the populist moment.\n\nPlease come having read the text. Drop us a line if you would like more details and to let us know if you will be joining\, so we have an idea of numbers at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nThese will take place in person at Golden Lane Community Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, London EC1Y 0SA. The venue is fully accessible. Please arrive at 7.30 for 7.45 start; we will finish at 9.00pm. All genders welcome.

SUMMARY:Reproductive Justice - Where next?
DESCRIPTION:On the 2nd of September\, Feminist Fightback were part of a coalition of feminist\, queer and trans\, migrant and anti-racist groups who took to the streets to counter the anti-abortion organisation March for Life. \nWe came together because anti-abortion\, anti-queer\, anti-trans and anti-migrant politics are linked – and our struggle for a liberatory future must be linked too. \n  \nTaking action together on the 2nd of September was one way for us to counter the reactionary and oppressive and gendered politics of the hard right – but the struggle continues. Join us on the evening of 15 September 2023 to take stock\, and to think together about where we go from here. \n  \nWe will meet from 7-9pm at Dalston Curve Garden\, Dalston Lane\, E8. The venue is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. It is outdoors (with some rain cover)\, so please dress accordingly. \n  \nAll welcome – we welcome people of all genders\, and we would love to have you at the meeting whether you came to the action or not. Please let us know if you can make it by emailing feminist.fightback@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Our Bodies Our Lives Our Right to Decide
DESCRIPTION:❌On 2nd September 2023 the anti-abortion organisation ‘March for Life’ will descend on London to demand an end to abortion under any circumstances ❌  \n  \n📣JOIN US ON THE STREETS TO OPPOSE THEM with JOY \n❤️‍🔥 Our Bodies – Our lives – Our Right to Decide ❤️‍🔥 \n  \n📍2 SEPTEMBER | 12:00 | OUTSIDE THE HOME OFFICE (2 Marsham Street\, LDN)  \n  \nGiven everything that has happened this week and the ongoing criminalization of abortion\, we are taking to the streets to defend our reproductive rights. We are part of a coalition of feminist\, queer\, trans\, migrant and anti-racist activists who refuse to allow the politics of bigotry to take over our streets. \n\nMarch for life is an off-shoot of a US organisation\, newly emboldened by the overturning of Roe vs Wade\, their theme for their march this year is #FreedomtoLive. \n  \n🌞For us #Freedomtolive means freedom over what happens to our bodies\, freedom to love who we want\, freedom to walk the streets without fear\, and freedom to cross borders (and to stay!). It means free healthcare\, education\, and public services. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub presents: 4 Months\, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for a screening of Palme d’Or winner ‘4 Months\, 3 Weeks\, 2 Days’ (1h 53m)\, a Romanian film by Cristian Mungiu\, set during the final years of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s rule. Abortion was illegal in Romania at that time\, and the film follows friends Otilia and Găbița as they attempt to obtain an illegal abortion on the black market when Găbița becomes pregnant. ‘4 Months…’ is a minimalist\, realist portrayal of the danger pregnant people face in states which deny access to abortion. \nWhen the film was released in 2007\, abortion was still illegal in Ireland. In 2023\, we’re in a world where Roe V Wade has been overturned\, making abortion illegal in many states. The hard right around the world have put gender and reproductive justice at the centre of their discursive and policy agendas\, attacking trans healthcare\, information for young people about sexuality and ‘non-traditional’ families\, alongside abortion rights. The US Supreme Court decision was a powerful and painful reminder that our rights are not settled\, that we have to fight to keep what we have and to push for more. We have to fight if we don’t want abortion to look like scared\, vulnerable\, exploited people waiting in hotel rooms for procedures or drugs that they’re not sure are safe\, risking criminalisation in the process. \nWe’ll be hosting a discussion after the film\, which will be a great chance to find out more about the organising Feminist Fightback are doing around threats to reproductive justice in the UK. We’d love to you to join us. \nPlease note\, the film contains scenes of medical procedures and sexual exploitation. \n \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged. Drinks and snacks will be available. \nSuggested donations on the door £2/5/10 unwaged/waged/solidarity. \nAll genders welcome. \nDoors open at 7pm. \nACCESS: \nWaterloo Action Centre is located at 14 Baylis Road\, SE1 7A\, close to Waterloo station\, near to the Old Vic theatre. The closest tube and train station is Waterloo.  The closest bus stops are Baylis road served by the 59 and 76 and The Old Vic served by the 1\, 68\, 168\, 172\, 176\, 188\, C10. \nThe event will take place in the mezzanine hall of Waterloo Action Centre which is on the first floor and is accessible via lift. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Feminist City: Claiming Space in a Man-Made World by Leslie Kern - Part 3
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for our spring reading group\, where we will discuss Leslie Kern’s book Feminist City: Claiming Space in a Man-Made World. This book is smaller than our last books at 224 pages so should be an easy read. \nThe series will take place over three sessions: \n\n Tuesday 25th April – Introduction: City of Men & Chapter 1: City of Moms\n Tuesday 30th May – Chapter 2: City of Friends & Chapter 3: City of One\n Tuesday 27th June – Chapter 4: City of Protest & Chapter 5: City of Fear & City of Possibility\n\nIn Feminist City\, through history\, personal experience and popular culture Leslie Kern exposes what is hidden in plain sight: the social inequalities built into our cities\, homes\, and neighbourhoods. Kern offers an alternative vision of the feminist city. Taking on fear\, motherhood\, friendship\, activism\, and the joys and perils of being alone\, Kern maps the city from new vantage points\, laying out an intersectional feminist approach to urban histories and proposes that the city is perhaps also our best hope for shaping a new urban future. It is time to dismantle what we take for granted about cities and to ask how we can build more just\, sustainable\, and women-friendly cities together. \nPlease come having read the text. Drop us a line if you would like more details and to let us know if you will be joining\, so we have an idea of numbers.\nfeminist.fightback@gmail.com \nThese will take place in person at Golden Lane Community Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, London EC1Y 0SA. The venue is fully accessible. Please arrive at 7.30 for 7.45 start; we will finish at 9.00pm. All genders welcome.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Feminist City: Claiming Space in a Man-Made World by Leslie Kern - Part 2

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub presents: The Janes
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be showing a documentary about events in 1970s that are once again topical. \nThe Janes is a documentary from directors Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes that tells the story of The Jane Collective\, which helped thousands of women obtain abortions in the US when they were still illegal in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision of January 1973 legalized abortion in the US and brought some relief. With its overturning a short while ago the story of their daring remains frighteningly relevant nearly 50 years later. \nThe film showing will be followed by a discussion featuring two guest speakers. \nJane Grant is a feminist activist who moved to London from the US. Attending the first Women’s  Liberation Conference in Oxford  in 1970 transformed her politics and reading Our Bodies Ourselves influenced her decision to become a midwife. \nSue O’Sullivan has been a women’s liberationist in London since the late 1960s after growing up in the USA.  She had an illegal abortion when she was 21 while living in New York State before any abortions were legal. This was a horrifying experience and led Sue to feel passionately about women’s right to accessible\, freely available abortion – now more than ever. \nFeminist Fightback Film Club will be at a new venue for this screening – Vibast Community Centre\, 167 Old Street\, London EC1V 9NH. The centre is in St Luke’s\, a three-minute walk from Old Street station. It is also served by a large number of buses\, the 55 and 243 having stops almost in front of the venue . The venue is accessible and has accessible toilets. We will screen the film with subtitles. \nDoors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start. All genders welcome. \nThis is a free screening\, with donations collected on the night. Drinks and snacks will be available.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub presents: The Modi Question- Joint film screening with Peace in India
DESCRIPTION:Join Peace in India and Feminist Fightback for a screening of the recent BBC documentary\, “The Modi Question”\, which examines the Indian Prime Minister’s role in deadly sectarian riots in 2002 and the impact of his government’s Hindu supremacist policies on India’s Muslim communities. \nPlease register via EventBrite for this screening + discussion with activists from India\, via Zoom. \nThe documentary and the Indian Government’s moves to ban it are illustrative examples of the hard right’s transnational reach\, and its authoritarianism. The documentary caused uproar in the corporate media in India\, was banned on Twitter\, and has led the Indian government to raid the BBC India offices. All this\, for bringing to international audiences what Indian journalists have known for quite some time\, but which a servile corporate media – and ‘friendly’ Western governments – have been all too eager to ignore. \nWe will be joined for a discussion via Zoom by three student activists in India who have faced incarceration for expressing dissent with the policies of the BJP government\, and experienced brutal violence perpetrated by the BJP’s student wing:\n\nAishe Ghosh\, student leader and politician from the Student Federation of India and former President of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union\nNatasha Narwal\, activist with the student feminist collective Pinjra Tod\nSafoora Zargar\, student leader and campaigner fighting for justice for atrocities committed against the Muslim community in India\n\nAll genders welcome. \nThe venue has accessible toilet facilities and a lift.

SUMMARY:International Women's Strike - 8 March 2023
DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback will be joining sisters and comrades on the streets this International Women’s Day. See you there! \n8TH MARCH 2023 \n\n6:30 PM @ TRAFALGAR SQUARE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Transnational Strike of all Women and Gender Non-Conforming folks take the streets to fight alongside our siblings\, to resist capitalist\, colonial and patriarchal exploitation!\n\n\n\n\nIndividualistic thinking maintains the status quo- and the conservative fascist nightmare that is unfolding in the UK demands collective resistance.\n\n\n\n\nTrans and migrant rights are under attack from the far-right and the government. The Police remain a violent institution that protects the interests of those who rape\, abuse and harrass us\, systematically.\n\n\n\n\nAround the world\, our sisters shout WOMEN LIFE FREEDOM from Kurdistan to Peru. They fight for liberation and sovereignty against violent and repressive states. We stand with them because this is our fight here too.\n\n\n\n\nWe are taking action to resist together\, and through rage and rebellious joy take up space to make our voices heard.\n\n\n\n\nWE STRIKE BECAUSE:\n\n\n1. in the UK alone 3 women are killed by men per week. We strike against femicide and to demand an end to the sexist\, homophobic\, and transphobic violence.\n2. in the past 5 years\, over 2000 police officers in the UK have been accused of sexual misconduct. We need to put an end to the silence pact that continues to protect their institutional misogyny and racism.\n3. we still get paid less than men for the same job and we overwhelmingly do the house work and care work on top of it.\n4. this government incites racist violence through its hostile environment and anti-refugee rhetoric. And we do not want the UK to continue to perpetuate imperialism.\n5. we are in full solidarity with all the UK workers who demand the government to prioritise living conditions\, and pay\, over an extortionate capitalist pursuit of profit.\n6. fossil fuel companies are making record profits\, while over 3 million households cannot afford to heat their homes.\n7. we strike with fury and love for the sisters that are no longer with us. For Brianna Ghey. For Sarah Everard. For Sarah Reed.\n8. WE STRIKE AS A WAY TO BUILD BETTER WORLDS TOGETHER.
