SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback reading group: A Short History of Trans Misogyny By Jules Gill-Peterson
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our winter reading group book: A Short History of Trans Misogyny By Jules Gill-Peterson. \nThis book offers a refreshing intervention into the historical underpinnings of misogyny against trans women. Taking a global approach\, Jules Gill-Peterson demonstrates that trans misogyny was not inevitable\, it was created within certain historical conditions. Throughout\, Gill-Peterson details examples of trans feminism that challenged colonial governments\, policing\, and exploitative working conditions. In drawing on this rich history\, Gill-Peterson offers new ways of thinking about and fighting against modern trans misogyny. \nThe book is 192 pages long. We will discuss this book in four sessions\, two chapters at a time: \nMonday 9th of December (61 pages): \n\nIntroduction: Femmes against Trans\nChapter 1: The Global Trans Panic\, Defense of self\, defense of the nation\n\nMonday 13th of January (36 pages): \n\nChapter 2: Sex and the Antebellum City\n\nMonday 10th of February (58 pages) \n\nChapter 3: Queens of the Gay World\nConclusion: Mujerísima and Scarcity Feminism\n\nPlease come having read the relevant chapters. Drop us a line if you would like more details at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nThe book is only available in hardback at £14.99. If you need help getting a copy of the book due to the high costs\, please email feminist.fightback@gmail.com and we will assist you. \nThe sessions will take place at the Sir Ralph Perring Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, EC1Y 0SA. This is in Golden Lane Estate by the swimming pool and tennis court. \nThe venue is fully accessible. Please arrive at 7.00 for 7.15 start; we will finish at 8.30pm. All genders welcome.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback reading group: Pirate Care: Acts Against the Criminalization of Solidarity Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our summer reading group book: Pirate Care: Acts Against the Criminalization of Solidarity by Valeria Graziano\, Marcell Mars and Tomislav Medak. \nIn many places around the world\, the freedom to simply care for one another is being attacked by the powerful\, and acts of solidarity are being made illegal. In a moment of struggle defined by the rollback of the social safety net\, the criminalization of migration\, and the right-wing clampdown on bodily autonomy\, radical networks of care are fighting back. From volunteer rescue boats in the Mediterranean to underground labs preparing gender-affirming hormones\, people are reclaiming the means to care for one another in defiance of a system that devalues and exploits the labor of care. Against atomized despair\, Pirate Care shows that fighting back isn’t only about legal and legislative changes but also about organizing\, direct action\, and disobedient care. \nThe book is 176 pages long. We will discuss this book in three sessions: \nMonday 12th of May (60 pages): \n\nOuverture: For a global mutiny\nChapter 1: Breaking their laws to repair our worlds\n\nMonday 9th of June (40 pages): \n\nChapter 2: Care-hacking against the techno-health armada\nChapter 3: Pirating imperial property\n\nMonday 14th of July (48 pages) \n\nChapter 4: Learning together under fire\nChapter 5: Organising mutiny to mutualise care\nConclusion: Swearing an oath\n\nPlease come having read the relevant chapters. \nWe have agreed a 20% discount at Housman’s bookshop for this book for members of our reading group. Please email feminist.fightback@gmail.com for more details.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub: Shoplifters
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our May film screening. \nWe will be showing Shoplifters\, a 2018 Japanese award winning film written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda.  Shoplifters is a study of family trauma and the fear of poverty. \nOn the margins of Tokyo\, a family is united by fierce loyalty and a penchant for petty theft. One day the father and son meet an abandoned little girl\, and\, despite their poverty\, the family takes her in. But an incident will expose their secrets that upend their tenuous\, below-the-radar existence. \nA film about chosen family and different mechanisms of care where the state has failed\, this film builds on the theme of care Feminist Fightback is tackling alongside our summer reading group on Pirate Care. By interrogating alternative networks of care as represented in Shoplifters and Pirate Care\, we hope to spark conversations and actions that demand freedom to live for all and the proper recognition of care work. \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged. \nDrinks and snacks will be available. \nSuggested donations on the door £2/5/10 unwaged/waged/solidarity. \nAll genders welcome. \nDoors open at 7pm. \nACCESS:  \nThe film showing will take place on the ground floor of Pelican House\, in the room at the back of the courtyard. The toilets are on the same same level. The space and toilets are level access from the road. \nClosest stations Bethnal Green tube station and Bethnal Green overground station. \nClosest bus stops Cephas Street and Three Colts Lane for the 106 and 254 buses.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub: Incompatible with Life
DESCRIPTION:This July in collaboration with Brazil Matters and the Feminist Assembly of Latin Americans\, Feminist Fightback will be screening the Brazilian documentary Incompatible with Life. \nThe 2023 documentary directed by Eliza Capai explores the deeply personal and universal themes of motherhood\, prenatal grief\, and abortion. The film begins with Capai’s own experience of terminating a pregnancy diagnosed as incompatible with life. Documenting her emotional journey\, Capai uses this personal narrative as a foundation to engage with a broader community of women\, capturing their struggles and coping mechanisms. \nIn Brazil\, where abortion in such cases can result in up to three years of imprisonment\, these women share their stories of navigating the emotional and legal complexities surrounding their pregnancies. Through intimate interviews and shared experiences\, Capai creates a poignant tapestry of voices\, reflecting on the pain and resilience inherent in their journeys. \nBodily autonomy and abortion are complex topics\, and this documentary focuses on one of the many types of personal stories that can lead someone to choose abortion. Join us also for our collaborative August film screening as we explore more of those stories in the lead up to the 6th of September where once again we will be countering the forces of traditionalism and the patriarchy as they try to abolish our right to choice. \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged. \nDrinks and snacks will be available. \nSuggested donations on the door £2/5/10 unwaged/waged/solidarity. This is a fundraiser event: all earnings will go towards the expenses of our coalition action in support of reproductive freedom in September. \nAll genders welcome. \nDoors open at 7pm. \nACCESS:  \nThe film showing will take place on the ground floor of Pelican House\, in the room at the back of the courtyard. The space and toilets are level access from the road. \nClosest stations Bethnal Green tube station and Bethnal Green overground station. \nClosest bus stops Cephas Street and Three Colts Lane for the 106 and 254 buses.

SUMMARY:Keep your laws off our bodies: Global Struggles for Bodily Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:Lets learn together about fighting for reproductive justice and bodily autonomy against rising fascism and the far right. \nAt this panel event our speakers and discussion will be on bodily autonomy and reproductive justice in a time of rising fascism and far right ideology and activity. \nTrans Kids Deserve Better\, Feminist Fightback\, SKB Socialist Women’s Union\, FALA (Feminist Assembly of Latin Americans) and Partia Razem will share their experiences of organising in this context. We hope that perspectives from struggles around the world including trans\, feminist and queer perspectives can help us to learn together about how to fight against the rising tide of fascism and the far right. \nThe event will take place 1pm-3pm at GIK-DER/Refugee Workers Cultural Association\, Wedge House\, White Hart Lane\, London\, N17 8HJ and will be chaired by a member of Young Struggle. \nThis is a lead up event to the counter demo against March for Life\, far right Christian group ostensibly campaigning for an end to abortion\, and also pushing anti-queer\, anti-trans and anti-migrant ideology and likely joined on the day as previously by fascists and ‘alt-right’ streamers. \nThe counter demo and panel event is being organised by a coalition of left and feminist groups including Feminist Fightback\, Anti-Capitalist Resistance\, Hackney Anarchists\, Young Struggle\, Feminist Assembly of Latin Americans\, Brazil Matters\, SKB Socialist Women’s Group\, RS21 and The Feminist Library.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub & Cine Brazil: Verde-Esperanza
DESCRIPTION:This August in Brazil Matters\, the Feminist Assembly of Latin Americans\, Feminist Fightback and Cine Brazil will be continuing our collaboration to screen two more documentaries centering abortion and people’s experiences of them. \nWe will be showing two films: Verde-Esperanza and Ours to Tell. \nVerde-Esperanza: legal abortion in Latin America (2023\, 43min) directed by Maria Lutterbach draws on the experiences of Argentina\, Colombia and Brazil to outline the struggles for legal abortion in Latin America. \nWith interviews\, data and context\, the documentary shows the current situation in each country: Brazil\, which is fighting to guarantee access to legal abortion in three cases and to prevent any setbacks in legislation; Argentina\, which decriminalized abortion in 2020\, with abortion services already being carried out in the country without any constraints for women; and Colombia\, which\, in February 2022\, decriminalized termination of pregnancy up to 24 weeks. The three experiences indicate paths and strategies for defending the rights of women and pregnant people. \nOurs to Tell (2020\, 17min) directed by Rayka Zehtabchi for Planned Parenthood and We Testify is the story of four people in the US who live full and empowered lives because they had the freedom to access abortion. \nThrough the real stories of people\, the film spotlights what it means to have control over one’s own bodies and thus the power to decide one’s own future.  A departure from the way abortion is often portrayed\, the film centers on voices that are rarely heard — including Black\, Latinx\, and transgender storytellers. \nBodily autonomy and abortion are complex topics\, and these documentary screenings follow our collaborative July screening were we explored more of those stories in the lead up to the 6th of September where once again we will be countering the forces of traditionalism and the patriarchy as they try to abolish our right to choice. \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged. \nSuggested donations on the door £2/5/10 unwaged/waged/solidarity. This is a fundraiser event: all earnings will go towards the expenses of our coalition action in support of reproductive freedom in September. \nAll genders welcome. \nDoors open at 6.30pm and screening starts at 7pm. \nACCESS:  \nFarr’s Pub is on Dalston Lane\, only  50 metres from Dalston Junction train station and Kingsland Road. \nThe event is in the Basement event space which means it is only accessible via stairs. There is a bathroom on the same level as the event space.

SUMMARY:Keep your laws off our bodies: Free\, safe\, legal abortion now!
DESCRIPTION:Reproductive rights are under renewed attack from far-right anti-abortion groups in both the UK & the US. They are not isolated—they are part of a wider international reactionary movement advancing a xenophobic\, racist\, homophobic and ableist agenda. The same forces mobilising against abortion are also targeting trans people\, queer communities\, disabled people and racialised groups. Well funded organisations like March for Life channel significant resources into large scale demonstrations that promote a coercive\, pro-natalist vision rooted in patriarchal control. \nThey may have money\, but we have something stronger: solidarity. We must come together to resist bad faith actors who cloak their attack on bodily autonomy and reproductive rights in religion and claims for “protecting women”. Their authoritarian views reduce our powers to live as we want\, forcing us into narrow definitions of what it is to be human. We fight for reproductive justice for all —regardless of age\, gender identity\, sexuality\, race or disability. \nJoin us on 6th September to counter the UK’s largest anti-abortion demonstration. Bring your voice\, your joy\, and your solidarity. All are welcome; we need every one to stand up against hatred and show that reproductive rights will not be surrendered. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback filmclub: Roma (2018)
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback Filmclub this September as in collaboration with Nanny Solidarity Network we screen Roma (2018\, 135mins) by Alfonso Cuarón \nRoma is an epic film that delivers a vivid\, emotional portrait of a domestic worker’s journey set against domestic and political turmoil in 1970s Mexico. Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón recreates the early-1970s Mexico City of his childhood\, narrating a tumultuous period in the life of a middle-class family through the experiences of Cleo\, the indigenous domestic worker who keeps the household running. Charged with the care of four small children abandoned by their father\, Cleo tends to the family even as her own life is shaken by personal and political upheavals. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback reading group: Why would feminists trust the police - Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our autumn reading group book: Why Would Feminists Trust the Police?: A tangled history of resistance and complicity by Leah Cowan \nLeah Cowan’s book deals with the tangled history of feminism’s complicity and resistance as it traces the history of British feminism’s alliances and struggles with the law and its enforcers. Drawing on the legacy of Black British feminism\, Leah Cowan reminds us of the vibrant and creative alternatives envisioned by those who have long known the truth: the police aren’t feminist\, and the law does not keep women safe. \nThe book is 196 pages long. We will discuss this book in three sessions: \nMonday 13th of October (58 pages): \n\nIntroduction: Why Would Feminists Trust the Police?\nChapter 1: False Histories in the Shadow of Empire\n\nMonday 10th of November (68 pages): \n\nChapter 2: A Symphony of Order and Chaos\nChapter 3: The ‘Sectorification’ of Radical Struggle\n\nMonday 8th of December (70 pages) \n\nChapter 4: Feminisms of Fear and Resistance in the New Millennium\nChapter 5: Defund\, Abolish\, Now\n\nPlease come having read the relevant chapters. \nThe event will be at Vibast Community Centre\, 267 Old Street\, London EC1V 9NH. It is about 3 minutes walking from Old Street station\, or the 55 and 243 buses stop just in front of the Centre. The venue is accessible and has accessible toilets. \nPlease arrive at 7.00 for 7.15 start; we will finish at 8.30pm. All genders welcome.
