SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub presents: Concerning Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our September film showing. This month we are showing Concerning Violence(89min)\, a 2014 documentary film written and directed by Göran Olsson. \nConcerning Violence is a bold and fresh visual narrative of African nationalist and independence movements in the 1960s and 1970s based on archive material from Swedish documentaries covering the most daring moments in the struggle for liberation from colonial rule. This powerful footage is combined with text from Frantz Fanon’s landmark book The Wretched of the Earth – written in 1960 and still a major tool for understanding and illuminating the neocolonialism happening today\, as well as the unrest and the reactions against it. \nContent warnings: scenes of military violence\, descriptions of torture\, racist language\, scenes of apartheid \n  \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged. Drinks and snacks will be available. \nSuggested donations on the door £2/5/10 unwaged/waged/solidarity. \nAll genders welcome. \nDoors open at 7pm. \nACCESS:  \nThe film showing will take place on the ground floor of Pelican House\, in the room at the back of the courtyard. The toilets are on the same same level. The space and toilets are level access from the road. \nClosest stations Bethnal Green tube station and Bethnal Green overground station. \nClosest bus stops Cephas Street and Three Colts Lane for the 106 and 254 buses.

DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our summer reading group book: Elsa Dorlin’s Self-Defense: A Philosophy of Violence\, translated from the french by Kieran Aarons. \nThis book is a study of violent self-defense in the struggle for liberation. In the history of colonialism\, racism\, sexism\, capitalism\, there has long been a dividing line between bodies “worthy of defending” and those who have been disarmed and rendered defenceless. \nElsa Dorlin looks across the global history of the left – from slave revolts to the knitting women of the French Revolution and British suffragists’ training in ju-jitsu\, from the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to the Black Panther Party\, from queer neighborhood patrols to Black Lives Matter – to trace the politics\, philosophy\, and ethics of self defense. \nThe book is 272 pages long. We will discuss this book in four sessions\, two chapters at a time: \nTuesday 28th of May \n\nPrologue\, What a body can do\nThe production of disarmed bodies\nDefense of self\, defense of the nation\n\nMonday 24th of June \n\nTestaments of self-defense\nThe state\, or the non-monopoly on legitimate defense\n\nMonday 29th of July \n\nWhite justice\nSelf-defense: power to the people\n\nMonday 30th of September \n\nSelf-defense and safety\nReprisals\n\nPlease come having read the relevant chapters. Drop us a line if you would like more details at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nWe urge people to buy the book or borrow it from a library\, if they can find it\, to support the author. However if you are not able to do either\, we can provide you with a link to read it online. \nAs an exception the first session will take place at Vibast Community Centre\, 167 Old St\, London EC1V 9NH. The venue is fully accessible. Please arrive at 7.00 for 7.15 start; we will finish at 8.30pm. All genders welcome.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Interviews with Radical Palestinian Women
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for the third and last book in our short look at the Palestinian struggle. Having read a fiction book (Minor Detail) and a non-fiction book (Greater than the sum of our parts)\, we’re now going to read ‘Interviews with radical Palestinian women’\, a book edited by the Shoal collective. \nThis book covers the struggles against colonialism\, white supremacy\, conservatism\, patriarchy\, state control and occupation. In the Shoal Collective’s own words: \nThe idea for this book came out of a concern that solidarity movements have a tendency only to engage with Palestinians about their fight against the Israeli occupation. Sometimes this can be a barrier to seeing them as comrades in our intersecting struggles for a better world and against authoritarianism\, white supremacy\, patriarchy\, capitalism and state control. \nFor this session we don’t expect you to have read the whole book. Instead\, please come having read at least a couple of the interviews\, and be ready to explain them to those who may have chosen to read different interviews than you. \nThis book can be bought in paper format or pdf or downloaded for free from the Shoal Collective’s website. It can also be found in brick and mortar bookshops like Housmans or Foyles. \nYou don’t need to have participated in the previous Feminist Fightback reading group sessions on Palestine to show up – everyone is welcome. Drop us a line if you would like more details at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nThe session will take place in person at Golden Lane Community Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, London EC1Y 0SA. The venue is fully accessible. Please arrive at 7.30 for 7.45 start; we will finish at 9.00pm. All genders welcome.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Minor Detail by Adania Shibli
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for a one off mid-winter fiction session. Taking our cue from current events in Gaza and the return of the occupation of Palestine to the forefront\, we have decided to read a book relevant to the Palestinian struggle. \nWe will be reading Adania Shibli’s 2020 book Minor Detail. A haunting meditation on war\, violence and memory\, Minor Detail cuts to the heart of the Palestinian experience of dispossession\, life under occupation\, and the persistent difficulty of piecing together a narrative in the face of ongoing erasure and disempowerment. \nMinor Detail was awarded Times Books of the Year 2020 and was longlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize. \nPlease come having read the text. SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Filmclub presents: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback for our Halloween film showing as this year we watch together Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014). Amirpour’s black and white debut film has become a cult classic often called the first Iranian vampire western. \nSet in the fictitious Iranian ghost town of Bad City\, the film features a chador-wearing\, skateboarding young female vampire known only as The Girl\, who stalks the streets of the city at night preying on unsavory men. \nThe Girl\, with her vampiric teeth and supernatural powers\, subverts the image of the veiled woman as submissive\, turning the victimhood suggested by the film’s title on its head. This girl walks alone at night with no fear; she is the one to be feared. \nExhibiting anger/ joy during the film at oppressive behaviour/ high points of struggle very much encouraged.

SUMMARY:Feminist Fightback Reading Group: Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment - Part 4
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for our summer reading group. We’ve taken the decision to replace the book we’d planned for our next reading group with ‘Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment’(2023) by Agnieszka Graff and Elżbieta Korolczuk. This book is much more aligned with our politics\, particularly around trans liberation and sex work decriminalisation. \n‘Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment’ charts the new phase of global struggles around gender equality and sexual democracy: the ultraconservative mobilization against “gender ideology” and feminist efforts to counteract it\, as well as how opposition to “gender” has become a key element of the rise of right-wing populism. The authors map the anti-gender campaigns as a global movement and argue that the anti-gender rhetoric is best understood as a reactionary critique of neoliberalism as a socio-cultural formation. \nWe’re reading ‘Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment’  to build our collective understanding of attacks on gender and reproductive rights from the hard right\, which is the current focus of Feminist Fightback’s activism. \nThe Open Access version of this book\, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. \nThe series will take place over four sessions: \nTuesday 25th July \n\nIntroduction: The demonisation of “gender” and the crisis of democracy.\nChapter 1: Gender\, anti-gender and right-wing populism: Recasting the debate.\n\nTuesday 29th August \n\nChapter 2: Mapping the anti-gender campaigns as a global movement: From religious trend to political struggle.\nChapter 3: “Worse than communism and nazism put together”: Poland’s anti-gender campaigns in a comparative perspective.\n\nTuesday 26th September \n\nChapter 4: Gender as “Ebola from Brussels”: The uses and abuses of the anti-colonial frame.\nChapter 5: Anxious parents and children in danger: The family as a refuge from Neoliberalism.\n\nTuesday 24th October \n\nChapter 6: Counteracting anti-gender movements: Towards a populist feminism?\nConclusions: Gender in the populist moment.\n\nPlease come having read the text. Drop us a line if you would like more details and to let us know if you will be joining\, so we have an idea of numbers at feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nThese will take place in person at Golden Lane Community Centre\, Golden Lane Estate\, London EC1Y 0SA. The venue is fully accessible. Please arrive at 7.30 for 7.45 start; we will finish at 9.00pm. All genders welcome.
