In the Shoal Collective’s own words: \nThe idea for this book came out of a concern that solidarity movements have a tendency only to engage with Palestinians about their fight against the Israeli occupation. Sometimes this can be a barrier to seeing them as comrades in our intersecting struggles for a better world and against authoritarianism\, white supremacy\, patriarchy\, capitalism and state control. \nFor this session we don’t expect you to have read the whole book. Instead\, please come having read at least a couple of the interviews\, and be ready to explain them to those who may have chosen to read different interviews than you. \nThis book can be bought in paper format or pdf or downloaded for free from the Shoal Collective’s website. This book is smaller than our last books at 224 pages so should be an easy read. \nThe series will take place over three sessions: \n\n Tuesday 25th April – Introduction: City of Men & Chapter 1: City of Moms\n Tuesday 30th May – Chapter 2: City of Friends & Chapter 3: City of One\n Tuesday 27th June – Chapter 4: City of Protest & Chapter 5: City of Fear & City of Possibility\n\nIn Feminist City\, through history\, personal experience and popular culture Leslie Kern exposes what is hidden in plain sight: the social inequalities built into our cities\, homes\, and neighbourhoods. Kern offers an alternative vision of the feminist city. Taking on fear\, motherhood\, friendship\, activism\, and the joys and perils of being alone\, Kern maps the city from new vantage points\, laying out an intersectional feminist approach to urban histories and proposes that the city is perhaps also our best hope for shaping a new urban future. It is time to dismantle what we take for granted about cities and to ask how we can build more just\, sustainable\, and women-friendly cities together. \nPlease come having read the text. DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Fightback and friends for our winter reading group\, where we will discuss Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s 2022 book Abolition Geography: Essays Towards Liberation \nThis series will take place over four sessions:\nMonday 31 October – part 1: Whats is to be done?\nMonday 28 November – part 2: Race and Space\nMonday 30 January – part 3: Prisons\, Militarism\, and the Anti-State State\nMonday 27 February – part 4: Organizing for Abolition \nThe book is a new collection of writings from one of the foremost contemporary critical thinkers on racism\, geography and incarceration. Abolition Geography moves us away from explanations of mass incarceration and racist violence focused on uninterrupted histories of prejudice or the dull compulsion of neoliberal economics. Instead\, Gilmore offers a geographical grasp of how contemporary racial capitalism operates through an “anti-state state” that answers crises with the organized abandonment of people and environments deemed surplus to requirement. Gilmore escapes one-dimensional conceptions of what liberation demands\, who demands liberation\, or what indeed is to be abolished. Drawing on the lessons of grassroots organizing and internationalist imaginaries\, Abolition Geography undoes the identification of abolition with mere decarceration\, and reminds us that freedom is not a mere principle but a place. \nPlease come having read the text.
