SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Radical History Walk: The East London Federation of the Suffragettes
DESCRIPTION:Winter Solstice Radical History Walk: The East London Federation of the Suffragettes \nBack by popular demand – another Feminist Fightback radical history walk. This time we’ll be following in the footsteps of the East London Federation of the Suffragettes to raise money for the Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan. \nSunday 12 December\, meet at 12 noon outside Bow Road tube station. Suggested donations £5 waged\, £2 unwaged\, £10 solidarity price. \nWorking-class women were central to the campaign for women’s suffrage. The East London Federation of the Suffragettes was founded by Sylvia Pankhurst in 1913 after she split with the Women’s Social and Political Union over their decision to focus on recruiting wealthy powerful women. Sylvia Pankhurst preferred to build a grassroots movement which fought not just for female enfranchisement\, but for the radical transformation of society on feminist\, socialist and anti-imperialist grounds. Come and find out how Pankhurst and other women living and working in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Britain fought for their rights as women and workers. Hear about how they organised mass demonstrations; fought off the police with a home-made weapon known as a ‘Saturday Night’; practised jujitsu and rifle shooting in Victoria Park; set up community kitchens and created cooperative factories. \nAs feminists today struggling against violence and institutionalised misogyny in the police\, we have a lot to learn from the campaigns of the East London Federation of the Suffragettes. We also want to use this history of women’s resistance to state violence as an opportunity to offer solidarity to women in Afghanistan who have been fighting the vicious state violence of both Western occupying powers and the Taliban. \n#radicalhistory #feministhistory #workingclasshistory    \nThe walk takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and will finish on Old Ford Road. It does not cover a great distance but we will be on our feet most of the time. Children are welcome to attend but the walk is aimed at an adult audience. Come prepared\, as the walk will go ahead whatever the weather. SUMMARY:Radical History Walk: class struggle on the riverbank
DESCRIPTION:110 years ago\, in the blistering heat of August 1911 women working in jam\, biscuit and sweet factories went on wildcat strike in protest against poverty wages and appalling conditions. Find out how they used direct action to fight their bosses and win! This radical history walk follows in the footsteps of the Bermondsey Uprising women and takes in other sites of class struggle on the riverbank. Join us on 19 September 2-5pm to find out about the strike by miners who dug Brunel’s Rotherhithe foot tunnel; a barmaids’ trade union; the socialist feminist Mayor of Bermondsey Ada Salter; and the multicultural working-class who lived and worked in these riverside neighbourhoods.\n\nThe walk is being organised by Feminist Fightback to raise money for the prisoners’ fund to support the 28 people facing imprisonment for participating in a demonstration against the Police\, Crime Courts and Sentencing Bill in Bristol in March 2021. This authoritarian and racist Bill will criminalise dissent\, including the kind of protests and picket lines that were crucial to the success of the Bermondsey Uprising and many other working-class and feminist struggles. It also introduces 10 years prison sentences for damaging statues of slave traders on the spurious basis of “respect” for history. We know that history is not wholly determined by those in power- it’s also made from below. On the walk we will be remembering our own histories of resistance\, and reconnecting with the rebels of the past to help build a better future.\n\nThe walk takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and will finish at Hartley’s Jam Factory\, Green Walk SE1. The walk does not cover a great distance but we will be on our feet most of the time. Please get in touch to talk about accessibility. Children are welcome to attend but the walk is aimed at an adult audience. There will be a toilet break. DESCRIPTION:Feminist Fightback invites you to a day of workshops\, focussing on attacks on access to abortion around the world\, and what we can do to resist together. \n2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion in Britain\, but the upsurge in right-wing populism represents a serious threat to reproductive rights in the UK and internationally. The election of Trump bodes ill for women and people of other genders who require reproductive health services in the United States\, right-wing governments in Poland and Spain have attempted to introduce dracionian anti-choice legislation\, and abortion remains illegal in both the Republic and the North of Ireland. The return of a hard right Conservative party in Britain is also likely to herald attacks on our access to abortion – renewed attempts to cut back the time limit\, the erosion of abortion services through NHS privatisation\, increased surveillance of abortion providers\, and giving the green light to a rising tide of anti-choice bigots picketing clinics. \nFeminist Fightback believes this is a crucial moment for us to take stock of the situation\, learn from inspiring examples of feminist activism\, and strategise for the future. \nThis workshop will hear from feminist activists from Ireland\, Poland\, Spain and the United States\, as well as those of us in Feminist Fightback to have been active in fighting for reproductive rights in Britain over the last 10 years. We will be focusing on attacks on abortion but through the lens of a wider reproductive rights model\, insisting that real ‘choice’ and control over our bodies must also entail the right to housing\, free healthcare and sex and relationships education. SUMMARY:Abortion Rights Action Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few years\, the space outside many abortion clinics in England has become contested. Right-wing religious groups have been making their presence felt outside clinics\, both with prayer vigils complete with hymns and religious icons\, and through the deployment of specially trained ‘pavement councillors’ who make great efforts to stop women going into clinics. \nFeminist Fightback has been one of the groups who have taken action against this growing anti-choice presence\, countering in particular the group ‘Helpers’ of God’s Precious Infants’. This is a comparatively new terrain of struggle\, and we have experimented with different strategies\, and initiated a series of conversations on tactics with other activists. We cannot ignore these groups and hope they will go away; we need to organise\, and refuse to let them take this space. \nThe defence of a woman’s right to choose should not just be an issue for the feminist movement\, but needs to involve others standing in solidarity with those seeking an abortion. The next big mobilisation of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants in East London will be on Saturday May 9th in Stratford. Feminist Fightback will be there\, providing a pro-choice presence and offering support to those using the clinic on the day. SUMMARY:What is working?
DESCRIPTION:What is the connection between day-to-day workplace organising and wider anti-capitalist struggle? \nWhat is our role as ‘revolutionaries’ in our own workplaces? \nWhat kinds of workplace struggles open up possibilities for wider and more fundamental social and political change\, and what kinds simply reproduce existing hierarchies and end up containing class struggle? \nThis discussion event is for anyone involved in\, or interested in having an open debate about\, our varied experiences of workplace organising. There have been a number of high profile struggles recently: the Tres Cosas campaign by cleaners at the University of London\, the Brighton hospitality workers\, the Tube strikes organised by RMT\, big one-day public sector strikes. \nBut they leave many open questions: \n– If the union cannot struggle for different sections of workers e.g those on temporary contracts\, even within the same workplace\, what good is the union? And what forms of struggle that bring different types of workers together can\, or are\, emerging in its place? \n– What actions\, apart from largely symbolic one-day strikes\, actually put pressure on the bosses and the state? \n– How can our political activity help to build worker’s collective self-organisation? \n– How does a particular workplace affect the type of struggle and form of organisation? For example\, the University of London (Tres Cosas) cleaners have been helped in their success by a number of factors including things like: they work in a high-profile university campus with a ready supply of left-wing student activists to support them\, they have strategic and translation support from the IWGB\, and the majority of workers speak Spanish as a first language and share a common cultural/national identity. With these particular circumstances\, what can other workers in different situations then learn from their experience? \n– If an organisation proclaims victories to recruit members to its organisation\, how can we have an honest discussion about what didn’t work and more open and collective reflections on strategy and conclusions? \n– And crucially\, why is this important? Why do we bother with workplace organising? Obviously it is an integral part of our politics within the left/communist milieu\, perhaps for different reasons. But at the very least\, the processes and content of our organising efforts should somehow connect to our particular analyses of how capitalism is working and how we move beyond it. But in practice\, does it? \nThis event is an attempt to explore these questions. We think that we urgently need to review our struggles so that we can critically reflect on what worked\, what didn’t and why. While individual organisations might have these discussions behind closed doors\, we invite people across the revolutionary left with different political analyses and experiences in workers’ organisation to come together to share experiences\, critically reflect on our role as militants in our workplaces and crucially\, to think about how our decisions connect to our wider vision of political transformation. We hope to start a fruitful exchange that will bring us closer to the question of what (new) forms of organisation are emerging that can bring workers together and build a strong\, international working class movement. \nAs part of the discussion we’ll be hearing from a few different people about their experiences of organising: \nSomeone from an anarcho-syndicalist organisation will talk about their experiences of organising with precarious workers and organising strikes in FE colleges in London. She also has years of experience of working within more traditional union structures. There will also be someone to talk about organising Brighton hospitality workers. \nWe will have someone talking about their experiences of organising as precarious teaching assistants at SOAS without the support of the union who refused to back them because they were already in a dispute about the pay of permanent lecturers. DESCRIPTION:If you require childcare for this meeting please email feminist.fightback@gmail.com. \nAs the Coalition government forces more and more mothers to return to work while their children are still very young\, a growing right wing lobby argues conversely that staying at home to look after the children should be valued and supported. \nThe feminist movement has long grappled with the problem of how to argue for women’s right to combine motherhood and a career\, without devaluing the crucial work of raising children. In the 1970s the Wages for Housework movement argued that the people who perform the reproductive labour of the home (cooking\, cleaning and caring for children) should receive a wage. \nOther feminists opposed this\, arguing that this would simply trap women in their role as housewives. SUMMARY:The S Word: A Conversation on Feminist Sex and Relationship Education
DESCRIPTION:We are a group from a diversity of backgrounds with an interest in the attitudes surrounding Sex and Relationships Education. We feel that a key reason why much SRE for young people is unsatisfactory is that as a society we have problems discussing\, and having\, sex and relationships in empowering ways. We therefore believe that in order to change attitudes\, to question and become more comfortable with our own relationships and sexuality\, and in short to build a society which is less squeamish about sex\, we need to start with ourselves. \nThese ideas have grown into planning a platform for educators – in the broadest sense – to meet. We are all potential learners and teachers of SRE throughout our lives. Whether you are a sex-educator\, campaigner\, parent\, carer\, teacher\, health worker\, or are simply interested in the subject\, you are welcome to join us. \nOn Sunday 17th February 2013\, we are holding a gathering in the Whitmore Community Centre\, near Old Street\, London. An informal opening session will lead to three sets of two parallel workshops. Topics will include ‘Communication and consent’; ‘Where do our sexual values come from/ is our sexuality our own?’; ‘body image and sexuality’; ‘The language of sex’; ‘Speed Debating’; ‘non-heteronormative sex’; and ‘A manifesto for my sexual values’. \nRegister to attend at http://feministsre.eventbrite.co.uk/ \nThere will be a creche and the venue is fully wheelchair accessible.
