I have built in many of these ideas and principles into my classroom practice. I think children’s ability to challenge and change their assumptions in a safe and inclusive environment is really wonderful.

Something that is coming up more and more with ever younger children in my experience, is negative body image, in particular children using ‘fat’ as an insult towards each other. This has been a significant issue in my class of 7 and 8 year olds this year. The dominant discourse of thin is good, fat is bad seems to be internalised very quickly by kids and I think sometimes the healthy eating agenda that many schools push quite hard inadvertently plays into this. Would be really interesting to hear about any experience people have of helping young children develop a positive body image and teaching positive messages about being open to seeing beauty in all forms and accepting difference. I guess teaching children to help themselves and their peers stay emotionally healthy in terms of how they see themselves and each other, is just as important as teaching about physical fitness, and I worry that the former may get overlooked.
