Feminist Fightback Film Club shows: Harlan County USA

November 11, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

A different, better USA, to the one that Donald Trump represents.

Harlan County USA is Barbara Kopple’s powerful 1976 documentary of a coal-mining strike in Kentucky. Years in the making, the film documents the extreme hardship of a community – women and men – fighting for decent wages, safety, the right to organise and the right to strike.

The film shows the “whole picture” of class war – corporate greed, collusion between the police and the mining bosses, the rights and wrongs of union organisation and the militancy of working-class women on the picket line. It will be a great starting point for a discussion about the difficulties of strikes and of organising and the differences between then – a moment before the world went neoliberal – and now.

We are hoping a Picturehouse worker will there to tell us about the strike and solidarity actions.

And we will also be showcasing the musical talents of old time fiddle and banjo player James Wilson:
